Getting started
What the game is, whether it is free, and how to start solving in your browser.
What is a word search puzzle?
A word search is a grid of letters with a list of words hidden inside it. Each word is placed in a straight line — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and sometimes spelled backwards — among random filler letters. The goal is to find and mark every word on the list. Word Search Puzzles is a free online version you play in your browser, with themed word lists, a timer, and an instant new-puzzle button.
Is Word Search Puzzles free to play?
Yes. The game is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there is no account, no paywall, and no interruption between puzzles. Open the page and you can start solving immediately.
Do I need to download or install anything?
No. Word Search Puzzles is a 100% browser-based game built with HTML and JavaScript. It loads in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and other modern browsers on desktop and mobile without a plugin, app store listing, or installer.
Where do the puzzles come from?
Each puzzle is generated in your browser the moment you ask for it. A theme is chosen at random, ten words are drawn from that theme, and a solver places them into the grid in random directions before filling the gaps with random letters. Because generation is client-side and seeded, the supply of puzzles is effectively unlimited.
Is the game family-friendly?
Yes. It is a single-player puzzle with no chat, no user-generated content, and no in-game purchases. The word lists are everyday vocabulary grouped by theme, which is why word searches are widely used in classrooms as well as for casual play.
Rules and scoring
How words are hidden, how tracing works, and how the timer and new-puzzle button behave.
How do I play word search online here?
Press on the first letter of a word and drag in a straight line to its last letter, then release. On a keyboard, move the focus square with the arrow keys, press Enter on the first letter, move to the last letter, and press Enter again. A correct trace locks in with a coloured line and crosses the word off the list. Find every word to complete the puzzle.
How does the timer work?
The clock starts when a puzzle begins and stops the instant you find the last word. There is no penalty for a wrong trace and no move limit. Your fastest completed puzzle is saved locally as your best time, and each new puzzle shows your result against it.
What are the controls for the game?
Mouse: click the first letter, drag to the last, release. Touch: slide from the first letter to the last. Keyboard: arrow keys move the focus square, Enter or Space anchors the first letter and then confirms the word at the last letter, and Escape clears the anchor. The M key mutes and unmutes the sound effects.
How big is the grid and how many words are there?
Every puzzle is a 12×12 letter grid with 10 hidden words drawn from a single theme. The size is fixed on purpose — there are no easy or hard modes to choose between, just a steady format you can get genuinely fast at.
What happens when I trace the wrong letters?
Nothing bad. The selection clears with a soft tone and you try again. There is no score penalty, no strike system, and no limit on attempts — an incorrect trace only costs the second or two it took to make.
Why did my correct word not register?
Almost always because the trace stopped one letter short of the end, or started one letter early. A selection only counts when its length exactly matches the word. Drag from the true first letter to the true last letter and it will lock in.
Strategy and speed
How to find words faster, handle diagonals and reversed words, and lower your best time.
How do I get faster at word search?
Read the word list before scanning, so you know what you are hunting. Look for each word by its first letter, then check the eight surrounding cells. Clear the longest words and any words with rare letters (Q, X, Z, J) first. Finally, sweep the grid in a fixed order — every row, then every column, then both diagonals — instead of searching at random. The tips page covers each of these in detail.
Do the puzzle themes matter?
They help. Every grid draws its words from one category — Animals, Fruits, Ocean Life, Outer Space, Weather, Music, and more — so a partial match you spot in the grid can often be completed from the theme alone. It turns a blind letter-by-letter search into an educated guess.
Are the diagonals really necessary to check?
Yes. On most completed puzzles, the last two or three words found were diagonal or reversed. Building the habit of scanning both diagonal directions after your row and column sweeps is the single biggest time-saver once the obvious words are gone.
Is there a way to reveal or skip a word?
There is no hint or reveal button — the challenge is the search itself. If a puzzle is not landing, the "New puzzle" button deals a completely fresh themed grid instantly, so you are never stuck on one board.
Devices, saving, and accounts
Mobile play, browsers, local progress, and why a best time might disappear.
Does the game save my progress?
Yes. Your best time, the number of puzzles you have completed, and your total words found are saved locally in your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no login. Because the save lives on the device, a different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data will look like a fresh start.
Can I play word search on mobile?
Yes. The board is touch-first: slide a finger from the first letter of a word to the last. The grid and word list scale to fit your screen, and the page stops scrolling while you drag so diagonal swipes register correctly. No separate app is needed.
Can I play offline?
The page needs a connection to load the first time. After that, because puzzles are generated on your device rather than fetched, some browsers may keep an open tab playable without a network connection. There is no dedicated offline app.
How do I reset my stats?
Open the stats panel from the game menu and use "Reset progress", then confirm with the second tap. That clears your best time, puzzles completed, and total words found for this browser. It cannot be undone.
Why did my best time disappear?
Local saves are lost if you clear cookies or site data, switch browsers, use a private window that has since closed, or open the game on another device. Some privacy tools and "lite" browsing modes also wipe local storage. Because the save never leaves your browser, it cannot be recovered from our side.
What browsers are supported?
Any current browser with JavaScript enabled: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop, plus their mobile versions. If the grid does not respond to input, update the browser, allow scripts for this site, and reload.
