Guide
How to Play Word Search
A word search hides a themed list of words in a letter grid. Trace each one from its first letter to its last — across, down, diagonally, forwards or backwards — until the whole list is clear.
Play word searchThe objective
Find every word on the list
Every puzzle is a 12×12 grid of letters with ten hidden words, all drawn from one theme — Animals, Fruits, Ocean Life, Outer Space, Weather, Music, and more. Those exact words are placed into the grid in straight lines; the rest of the grid is random filler.
A hidden word can run in any of eight directions: left-to-right, right-to-left, top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top, or along either diagonal. You finish the puzzle by tracing all ten. There is no way to lose — only your time, which is saved on your device as a personal best.
The game is free, runs in the browser, and needs no account. Open the board when you want to solve; use this guide for the controls, the rules, and the habits that cut your time.
Controls
Drag, swipe, or use the keyboard
Tracing a word is one motion from its first letter to its last. The selection snaps to the nearest straight line, so it forgives a rough drag.
Mouse
Click and drag
Press on the first letter, drag to the last, and release. The trace locks to the nearest straight line — horizontal, vertical, or diagonal — so a rough drag still registers cleanly.
Phone & tablet
Touch and swipe
Put a finger on the starting letter and slide to the end of the word. The board disables page scrolling while you drag so a diagonal swipe is never mistaken for a scroll.
Accessibility
Keyboard
Move the focus square with the arrow keys, press Enter or Space on the first letter to anchor it, move to the last letter, and press Enter or Space again to trace the word. Escape clears the anchor. Press M to mute.
The loop
Four steps, every puzzle
The rhythm is the same on every grid. Internalising it is most of what “getting fast” means.
- 1
Read the word list
Every puzzle comes with a themed list of words — animals, fruits, weather, space, and more. Those exact words are hidden in the letter grid. Nothing else in the grid is a target.
- 2
Trace a word
Press on the first letter and drag in a straight line to the last letter. The selection snaps to whichever of the eight directions you are closest to, so you never have to be pixel-perfect.
- 3
Words hide in eight directions
A hidden word can run left-to-right, right-to-left, top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top, or along either diagonal. Reversed and diagonal placements are where the time goes.
- 4
Clear the whole list
Each correct trace locks in with a coloured line and crosses the word off the list. Find every word to finish the puzzle; your time is recorded and a new themed grid is one tap away.
Rules & timer
What counts, and what the clock does
One ruleset, one grid size. There are no difficulty modes to pick between — just a consistent format you can measure yourself against.
The objective
Find every word on the list inside the 12×12 letter grid. Words are placed in straight lines only — never bending around a corner — but a line can run in any of eight directions and can read forwards or backwards.
Making a selection
A selection is valid only when it is a straight line from one letter to another and its length matches a word on the list exactly. A correct trace is highlighted permanently; an incorrect one simply clears with a soft tone and costs you nothing but time.
The timer
The clock starts the moment a puzzle begins and stops when the last word is found. There is no penalty system and no move limit — the only pressure is your own best time, which is saved on your device.
Finishing and restarting
When the list is clear the puzzle is complete and your time is shown against your personal best. "New puzzle" deals a fresh themed grid instantly, with no page reload, so you can go straight into the next one.
Use New puzzle at any time for a fresh themed grid. Details on local saves and resets live in the word search FAQ.
Common mistakes
Why the last few words take so long
A slow solve is almost always a search-method problem, not bad luck. These four patterns cost the most time.
Only scanning left to right
Most unsolved words at the end of a puzzle are vertical, diagonal, or reversed. If you only read the grid the way you read a book, you will stall with three or four words left every time.
Ignoring the theme
The category is a real hint. On an "Ocean Life" grid, spotting a lone O–C–T is almost certainly the start of OCTOPUS. Reading the list first turns a blind search into a targeted one.
Releasing the drag too early
A trace only counts when its length matches the word. Stopping one letter short of the end is the most common reason a word you clearly found "does not register" — drag all the way to the final letter.
Re-checking cells you already cleared
Without a system you end up searching the same corner three times and never looking at the opposite edge. Pick a sweep order — rows, then columns, then diagonals — and trust it.
Strategy habits
Tips to solve faster
Treat these as habits, not tricks. For the full breakdown, see the strategy tips page.
- Scan the grid for the first letter of a word, then check the eight cells around each hit.
- Hunt the longest words first — they cover the most cells and are hardest to hide, so they fall fastest.
- Chase rare letters. A word with a Q, X, Z, or J is usually the quickest find on the board.
- Sweep methodically: read every row left-to-right, then every column top-to-bottom, then both diagonals.
- Remember words can be backwards. If a word "should" be there but reads wrong, try tracing it the other way.
- Once a word is found, its letters can still belong to another word — overlaps are common and intended.
Where you can play
Same game on phone and desktop
Word Search Puzzles runs in any modern browser with no install. If two devices show different best times, that is expected: progress never leaves the browser you played in.
Desktop browsers
Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari all run the game with no plugin. Click and drag to trace words, or use the keyboard focus square for a mouse-free solve.
Phones and tablets
The board is touch-first. Slide a finger from the first letter to the last; the grid scales to fit your screen so the full puzzle and word list stay visible without zooming.
Progress on this device
Your best time, puzzles completed, and total words found are stored in local browser storage. They stay until you reset them or clear site data, and they never sync to a server.
